I agree a lot with this, since I am more of a graphical designer than a coder ... We still judge people from the way the look and dress, we judge a car at first from how shiny it is, I don't think people would not notice the way a site looks.
Many people don't even know how a site is made (cannot ask them to comment on the code or validation), but they can surely know if a site is ugly or not.
It's some great information, but I lacked at the fact that a site with that article has such a bad design.
Yes, I agree also... I have gone to numerous sites that had no appeal at all and left without even looking. If you have a good looking site and a not so good looking site with the same products the one that looks good will get the sale. It is hard for me to buy from a ugly site.
Yes, I agree. The first impression is very important: it can't be too crowded, and the colours have to be suitable.
If your design is horribly bad, you can just say 'goodbye' to any visitors.
I absolutely agree on this one! The first impression on a website is the most important just like with anything else. Much like with interviews, and first dates! hehee
Wow, ironic enough, that design on that site wasn't too eye catching and it didn't make me want to stay on there. I guess they should've designed better.
-But, Maddox (
http://maddox.xmission.com/) has a very low graphic website and has thousands of hits each day.. so many graphics don't matter.. Content does.

Haha, I had to check out that link to see what everyone was saying. It is ironic that they are talking about eye catching design but their own article page is too wide and long. You definitely need a widescreen display to view that page.
Overall, I strongly agree that if you want people to take action (buying, clicking on your ads, interacting, etc..) You need a clean and eye catching design for people to stay on your site and not click on "x" on the top right corner. People these days do not have long attention span.
Web designers have as little as 50 milliseconds to capture the interest of potential customers. first impressions can influence subsequent judgments of website credibility and buying decisions.
Thanks
Righht.. you will never get second chance for first impression for your website.. one of webmaster/desiger quoted me that thing..
